چکیده
Electrodes for scanning ion-selective potentiometric microscopy (or potentiometric SECM) were developed and used to image local concentration profiles of NH4+, K+, and Zn2' ions. Neutral carrier-based micropipet ionselective electrodes with high spatial resolution (-2-3 pm) and fast response time (-300 ms) were fabricated and employed as potentiometric SECM tips, and highresolution ion-selective images around micrometer-scale objects were obtained for selected model systems. This technique was also used to map enzyme activity and to measure concentrations within the diffusion layer of an ultramicroelectrode. Several methods are used to determine the absolute distance between tip and target on the basis of measurement of solution resistance using As/ AgCl micropipet electrodes or potentiometric measurement of the steadystate concentration profile using ionselective microelectrodes; the corresponding theories of both are presented. Dual-channel tips are also introduced for ion-selective potentiometric microscopy. In these, one channel operates as an ion-selective electrode and the other as a distance sensor. Quantitative concentration profiles can be obtained with knowledge of absolute tip position.

The micropipet delivery-substrate collection (MD-SC) mode of scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) is demonstrated. This new mode is intended for the study and imaging of electrochemical as well as electrocatalytic reactions of neutral species that cannot be generated electrochemically. The spontaneous transfer of the analyte from an organic solvent across an interface between two immiscib...

This paper provides a brief review of a relatively new technique, namely scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM), and its applications in measuring, characterising and evaluating corroding systems. Localized corrosion processes and electrochemical activity distributions in surfaces can thus be investigated in real time with high spatial resolution. The SECM is a unique near-field scanning te...

We describe herein a method for the simultaneous measurement of temperature and electrochemical signal with a new type of thermocouple microelectrode. The thermocouple microelectrode can be used not only as a thermometer but also as a scanning electrochemical microscope (SECM) tip in the reaction between tip-generated bromine and a heated Cu sample. The influence of temperature on the SECM imag...

Scanning electrochemical microscopy with soft microelectrode array probes has recently been used to enable reactivity imaging of extended areas and to compensate sample corrugation perpendicular to the scanning direction. Here, the use of a new type of microelectrode arrays is described in which each individual microelectrode can independently compensate corrugations of the sample surface. It c...
